Two-day riding tour for children aged six years and up, who are starting to ride, and their parents. We take a leisurely ride from Kálfholt along the banks of the Þjórsá to Þykkvibær, far away from all road traffic. We provide good, reliable saddle horses, and the young riders are accompanied throughout by an escort vehicle. The first day ends at Þykkvibær with a traditional Icelandic kvöldvaka – a convivial evening programme of storytelling and song. Overnight accommodation in the Þykkvibær sports centre.
Summer Programme (1 May – 30 September) – Treks
All day tours are available for individuals and for groups of up to 15 people.
Tölt treks are designed for horsy people of all ages. On these tours we aim to ensure that our guests experience the interplay of nature, horse and rider. We ride at moderate speed on a variety of bridle paths, travelling with the freedom to stop when we feel like it, to enjoy the moment.
The Trip at a Flying Pace is a six-day riding tour in the highlands, for experienced riders only. We make an extensive tour in the catchment area of the Þjórsá river – Iceland’s longest river (230 km), which flows through many different kinds of landscape, from verdant lowland pastures to rugged lava fields, formed in eruptions from some of Iceland’s most powerful volcanoes. We ride along the west bank of the river up the valley, which boasts many places of natural beauty and sites of historic importance. We cross the river at the Sultartangi hydro-electric plant and ride through a craggy lava landscape before reaching greener pastures on the homeward journey.
Riding, the great outdoors, fun and relaxation in good company – that’s what makes our Ride of the Valkyries trek so special. As the name implies, these are tours for women of all ages. And they always have a great time on these treks: young and older, inexperienced and more experienced riders, the ladies all bond and have fun as they ride through the splendour of Icelandic nature.
